The "New Meta" Explained: Why Audiophiles Are Moving Beyond the Harman Curve

For the better part of a decade, one phrase dominated IEM marketing and forum arguments alike: "Harman-tuned." It was shorthand for "this sounds correct," a target curve derived from listening research that became the closest thing the hobby had to a north star. But in the last couple of years, a quiet rebellion has taken hold. A new target — usually called the "New Meta" — is reshaping what enthusiasts mean by neutral, and the best new budget IEMs are increasingly tuned to it. If you've seen the term and wondered what it actually means, here's the honest story of why the goalposts moved.

First, what the Harman target actually was

The Harman IE target came out of formal listening research: play many tunings to many trained listeners, find the response that the largest number preferred, and call that the target. The resulting curve has a recognizable shape — an elevated bass shelf, a dip through the lower mids, a pronounced peak in the upper midrange around 3 kHz, and a measured amount of treble above that. For years, hitting this curve was the mark of a "done right" IEM, and for good reason: in repeated blind testing, it genuinely was the most-preferred single target by a wide margin.

The problem wasn't the curve — it was the word

Here's the honest crux of why the conversation shifted, and it's less about acoustics than about language. "Harman-tuned" got abused into near-meaninglessness. Manufacturers slapped the label on anything with a visible bass shelf and a forward upper midrange, whether or not it was actually designed against the real Harman IE curve — which is a specific thing with defined parameters. Reviewers used it as lazy shorthand; buyers repeated it; and soon a vast range of IEMs that measured nothing alike were all flying the same "Harman" flag. Enter the New Meta (JM-1)

The "New Meta" — built around a target often called JM-1, popularized through the headphones.com and In-Ear Fidelity (Crinacle) communities around 2023–2024 — is the response. Compared to Harman, it flattens and tucks Harman's elevated lower-bass shelf, fills in a fuller midrange, keeps the upper-mid presence peak but pairs it with a more relaxed, less accentuated treble. The net effect is a sound most people describe as more neutral, more natural, and easier to listen to for long stretches — relaxed without being dull, and, as the best New Meta sets prove, perfectly capable of resolving fine detail.

It's worth being clear-eyed about the foundations, though. The New Meta is a refinement and a preference, not a scientific overthrow of Harman. In fact, formal research muddies the "which is better" question beautifully: a study by Sean Olive using the newer 5128 rig found that quite different targets could score essentially equally with trained listeners, and — crucially — that bass-light and bass-heavy curves can be preferred about equally as long as the treble scales proportionally to the bass. Even Crinacle, central to the JM-1 target's popularity, has been careful not to oversell it as the final word.

What this actually means for you

Three honest takeaways. First, "neutral" is a moving target, not a fixed truth — it's the current best-guess consensus of a hobby that keeps refining its tools and tastes, and it will move again. Second, treat "Harman-tuned" on a product page with deep skepticism; it's marketing more often than measurement, and tells you very little about how something actually sounds. Look at the frequency response graph instead. Third, and most freeing: the "best" target is still the one your ears prefer. The whole New Meta saga is ultimately a reminder that these curves are sophisticated starting points, not commandments — the research itself shows real people enjoy a wide range of tunings.

So if you see a new budget set praised for its "New Meta tuning," now you know what's being claimed: a fuller, more relaxed, more natural take on neutral than the old Harman shape.
