Earworms: The Science of Why Songs Get Stuck in Your Head

It's happened to all of us. A song — often one you don't even like — lodges itself in your brain and plays the same fifteen seconds on repeat for hours. Counterintuitively, listening to the whole track all the way through can resolve the loop — the fragment was stuck partly because your brain never "completed" it. Engage your verbal brain. Chewing gum, oddly, has shown real effect in studies — the jaw movement interferes with the subvocal rehearsal that keeps the loop alive. Doing a moderately demanding mental task (a puzzle, a conversation, reading) occupies the same brain resources the earworm is using and crowds it out. Swap in a "cure" song. The trick is not to fight it — trying hard to suppress an earworm tends to make it stickier, the same way trying not to think of something guarantees you will.

They tend to feature music you find catchy and, on balance, enjoyable, and many people find the experience pleasant as often as annoying.
